Peppermint Essential Oil - Body, Skin, Hair and Scalp
Peppermint essential oil has healthy benefits for the body, skin and hair. Peppermint oil is extracted, by steam distillation, from the leaves of Mentha pipertita herb. This hybrid herb is a cross between watermint and spearmint. It is found throughout the world, typically, in moist and shady locations. It is an old world medicinal herb. Peppermint oil is pale yellow in color with thin consistency and strong, fresh, minty aroma.
MEDICINAL BENEFITS
RELIEVES: apathy, asthma, bronchitis, colds, cramps, dry coughs, fainting, fevers, headaches, insect bites, migraines, nausea, nervous stress, muscular aches, pneumonia, rheumatism, sinus congestion, toothaches, vertigo and fainting. Aids digestion.
It has aromatherapy benefits. Therapists use peppermint essential oil for various reasons: reduce mental fatigue and depression, improve concentration, mental clarity and promote a spirit of, energized, rejuvenation.
SKIN CARE
Peppermint oil offers a variety of healthful skin conditions. It is used in many commercial or homemade beauty products. Mostly, it offers a cooling sensation to the skin. It contains a high amount of menthol which can be irritating for some, especially those with sensitive skin. It stimulates circulation, invigorates and freshens skin. It aids oily skin by reducing skin blemishes and acne. It reduces inflammation and redness with a cooling, soothing, sensation. This oil is not, necessarily, recommended for dry or flaky skin but a peppermint foot scrub is soothing for dry cracked heels. Find this oil in natural cosmetics, commercial or homemade soaps, lotions, bath salts, foot scrubs, creams, lip balms, shampoos or other bath and body products.
RELIEVES: itchiness, redness and skin inflammation. Useful for: dermatitis, acne, ringworm, psoriasis, scabies and sunburns.
MAKING HOMEMADE SOAP
Peppermint essential oil is often used for making homemade soap. It has an antimicrobial and toning nature. Blend it with basil, benzoin, bergamot, black pepper, cypress, eucalyptus, geranium, grapefruit, juniper, lavender, lemon, lime, marjoram, pine, rosemary, spearmint, thyme or tea tree, (Melaleuca oil). It blends, especially, well with citrus oils! The strong fragrance of peppermint is evident in homemade soap. Be careful not to add too much peppermint essential oil to your homemade soap recipes. Peppermint has a natural strong fragrance and too much can irritate skin with an overpowering scent.
A homemade soap made with peppermint is cleansing, soothing, invigorating and refreshing for skin. Use it for dry itchy skin or acne relief. It moisturizes and soothes itchy skin. Use after working outside or gardening. It can balance oily skin while reducing inflammation and redness of blemishes. Use it for making homemade bar or homemade liquid soap.
HAIR CARE
Peppermint oil can be cooling to the scalp. It helps get rid of dandruff and fights head lice. It improves dry scalp conditions. It stimulates hair follicles, binds to hair roots, increases blood circulation and is a beneficial treatment for hair loss. Mixing peppermint oil with jojoba oil and glycerin can promote hair growth. Peppermint oil acts as an astringent for the scalp by reducing oils, without leaving a grimy feeling. It conditions, adds luster, shine and manageability to hair. Just a couple drops of, diluted, peppermint oil can be added to your commercial or homemade shampoo or conditioner. Use your hair care products as you normally would. Discontinue use or increase dilution if any scalp irritation occurs.
CAUTIONS TO HEED
As with all essential oils there are cautions to heed. CAUTION! Essential oils are bioactive ingredients. This means they contain natural chemicals that interact with biological systems. They are potent chemicals and should be used with care. Never use large amounts of essential oils externally or internally. Never use them straight. They must always be diluted in carrier oil, or soap, lotion or other buffering agent. Never use them without knowing what their bioactive compounds are known to do.
